To me this song tastes creamy, the way coffee does with cream. I gave the voice a touch of LA-2A saturation and careful tone shaping, soft but not harsh, not too thick. I balanced everything toward sustain over transients, so the band flows around the melody and surrounds it. I wanted it to make your day a bit tastier.
When I first heard the demo, I pictured a duo playing to a handful of people. The song is too personal for a big room, and the intimacy wouldn't survive one. I wanted to carry that closeness onto the record. The acoustic guitars and cellos are bright by nature, so I wrapped them in warm, soft System 6000 reverbs, with so much space around them that you can dissolve into it.
This song was begging to become a huge wall, and its story is a grindy, bumpy road, so I didn't smooth it out. I pushed the lead vocal through a tube preamp into overdrive, and I know many would call that too bold. It was exactly what the song needed. Lots of chamber reverb makes everything larger still. Medium-rare, no sides.

I have worked in audio since 2015, most of it as a touring lead audio engineer and system engineer, in arenas of 10 to 30 thousand people, in clubs and at corporate shows. Now I mix and master records in my studio in Calgary for independent artists around the world.
A properly designed and deployed large-format PA becomes a palette. The mix engineer becomes an artist who paints over it with the colours the artist gave them.
The same thing happens in the studio when a project arrives.
For a mix, send WAV stems starting from the beginning of the song, at your session's sample rate, with no processing on the master bus. Add a reference track and a note on what the song is about. For mastering, send one stereo WAV file in 32-bit floating point, with no limiter or clipping on it.
Adjustments to the mix: levels, tone, small automation moves. Rearranging the song or replacing parts is a new project and gets a new quote.
